Honoring Nguyen Du
Ladies and Gentlemen!
To honor the great contributions of the great poet Nguyen Du to Vietnamese culture and the core values of humanity, in 1964 in Berlin, Germany, the World Peace Council issued a Resolution to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Nguyen Du's birth in 1965, along with 8 other outstanding global figures. And 50 years later, on October 25, 2013, in Paris, France, the 37th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (the UNESCO) issued Resolution 37C/15 on organizing the 250th Anniversary of the Birth of the Great Poet Nguyen Du in 2015.
The 250th Anniversary event was solemnly held in Ha Tinh City, with the participation of leaders of the Communist Party, State, and ministries, along with the representatives of 63 provinces and cities across Vietnam. The ceremony is a way for contemporary Vietnamese to honor and express their continual gratitude for the great values that the Great Poet had left for his homeland and people, continuing to spread the quintessence of Vietnamese culture around the world.
